In Beijing, the capital of China, a central axis shaped the layout of the entire city and reflects the evolution of an ideal capital city as described in the ancient text "Kaogongji," also known as "The Book of Diverse Crafts." First built in the 13th century during the Yuan Dynasty, the 7.8-kilometer-long axis runs north to south through the heart of historical Beijing. It consists of former imperial palaces and gardens, sacrificial structures, and ceremonial and public buildings. Iconic landmarks along this axis of symmetry include the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, Jingshan Park, and the Bell and Drum Towers. Dubbed "The Backbone of Beijing," the central axis was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2024.
