　　黑城建于公元九世纪，为西夏王朝“黑山威福军司”所在地。1286年，元世祖在此设“亦集乃路总管府”，大规模扩建黑城，使这里成为中原到漠北的居延古道交通枢纽。黑城遗址是古丝绸之路上现存较为完整、规模较为宏大的一座古城遗址。历史上黑城地区水草丰美，是古代重要的戍边开垦区。
