1、confines 在这里不是动词，而是名词 “范围区域”的意思，“the bottom confines of the oceans----海底”
anyone为主语，
"who gave more than a passing thought to the bottom confines of the oceans "是定语从句，主句动词是assume,其后接一个that引导的宾语从句。

2、这句你少打一个to,不太好理解因为他用倒装了，正常语序是。

“The gentle slope of the continental shelf---大陆架缓坡” 是主语，
“geologically part of the continents.”是其同位语，动词"run out --延伸" 与from_..to..连用
